Personal Statement:
I am choosing to do Media at college because it’s what I love to do! I am currently completing my third year in the subject. Over time I’ve been doing this subject I have fallen in love with cinematography. I have past experience in the projects I have completed and the personal photography I have been doing on the side. My career aspiration, to go forward into Film and Tv production and to become a cinematographer.
I started to fall in love with the production side of media during the first project I did at Long Road called the bomb. The task was to go out and film a chase sequence that would happen while the protagonist was trying to find a bomb on the school grounds. We then used greenscreens to add in explosions across the grounds. Throughout my years at Long Road, I’ve continued to build on skills such as the ones I developed during this project and even learned more skills! I’ve done work in graphic design and animation. Not only using programmes like Photoshop and Illustrator from the Adobe programmes but also using Autodesk Maya. I personally have some After Effects experience. These skills are all ones that I have used throughout my coursework. I’ve learned so much about production and after using these programmes and the equipment I’ve used I’ve honed down the type of work I want to be doing. Cinematography.
I have a part-time job at McDonald's. I was interacting with customers all day which gave me a wide range of people I had to connect to, because of this I was able to adapt that into my work and group projects and was able to create friendships with people I had nothing in common with. My Mum and I both work on training our two dogs up for Agility, Gundog, Obedience training and Flyball competitions. We have competed in multiple competitions across the county and even got 4th place in a county-wide Agility competition! These include teamwork and communication between My Mum and myself but also the dogs too.
During the summertime and during Year 11 I completed Bronze DofE, NCS with Cambridge United Football Club and I also completed my Level 6 LAMDA. These all included outside commitments and teamwork between the other NCS participants, my team on DofE and even my friends who completed my LAMDA with me. Alongside all of this I’ve been cycling around town and I have been commuting on my bike for the past three years to get fit and to build up muscle.
My career goal is to ultimately work as a Cinematographer. I absolutely love being behind a camera and feel most natural when I am! I want to be at your university to reach this career goal because I feel it would be the best place to build upon those skills, in an area that would be great to change to live in and purely down to one factor. In my opinion, the course seems like the right one for me.
Personally, out some of the more well-known Cinematographers, I admire Stanley Kubrick’s work the most. Especially my personal favourite movie, The Shining. The way he changes and adapts traditional film structure to suit the vision he wants to create is astonishing and admirable. During the production of The Shining Stanley Kubrick asked Jack Nicholson to interpret the script which resulted in scenes like the tennis ball in the hotel room being added.
I have also written a CV:
Benjamin Shaw
I am a very responsible young person who takes that responsibility very seriously. If I am asked to do something, I will always do it to the best of my ability. I am always on time and commit 100%.
Having moved from a school environment into a sixth form college, I have found that change to be eye-opening. Working with so many different people on so many different topics has really changed my view of the world and I am looking to improve that further.
